Weton: Your Javanese Birthday

Up • Maps • Javanese Horoscope • Javanese Calendar • Falling Lizards • Sneezing Fits

According to Javanese traditional wisdom, the significance of any event (and the character of a person born on any given day) can be appraised by examining when the event occurs in relation to various calendrical cycles. One of the most common applications of this method of divination is found in the system of Javanese birthdays called wetonan.

Your weton is the conjunction of the seven-day week (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) with the traditional five-day Javanese market week (Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wagé, Kliwon). Thus, your birthday might be Legi Monday, or Wagé Thursday, or any of 33 other combinations of the seven- and five-day weeks. The cycle repeats every 35 (7 x 5) days, so that your Javanese birthday recurs every five weeks from the day you were born.

If you already know your weton, click one of these links:

Otherwise, you can easily find your weton using special modular calendars. Then you can read your Javanese horoscope, as I have interpreted it from several traditional sources. Have fun!

If you would prefer a more detailed explanation of the wetonan system, including a look at some of the original Javanese sources that form the basis for my more modern interpretations, click here.
